Alberta WaterSMART is proud to be part of the development of two collaborative papers, The 2013 Great Alberta Flood: Actions to Mitigate, Manage and Control Future Floods (Flood White Paper) and The 2013 Great Alberta Flood: Progress Report on Actions to Mitigate, Manage and Control Future Floods, in response to flooding in our province. These papers were created to provide proactive recommendations and address gaps in flood mitigation to determine comprehensive flood management solutions. This is a province-wide issue that Alberta WaterSMART is very passionate about, which is why ongoing collaboration and communication will continue to take place. As flooding will continue to occur, it is vital that appropriate preventative actions take place.
During the development of both reports, draft versions were posted on the Alberta WaterPortal website. Public feedback was encouraged and ensuing responses were an invaluable source of information. For example, response to the original Flood White Paper, The Great Alberta Flood: Actions to Mitigate, Manage and Control Floods, was so positive that a second document was published titled, The 2013 Great Alberta Flood: Actions to Mitigate, Manage and Control Future Floods Feedback Compendium, that shares individual feedback, but is not necessarily the views or opinions of Alberta WaterSMART.
The follow-up report titled, The 2013 Great Alberta Flood: Progress Report on Actions to Mitigate, Manage and Control Future Floods, is our most recent report that highlights actions undertaken since the June 2013 Flood and release of our original Flood White Paper. The focus of this paper was to identify areas where flood mitigation gaps remain.
We're always open to further discussion and feedback. Please contact us with any thoughts, questions, or concerns. We look forward to seeing the necessary proactive steps take place that will help mitigate future flooding in this province.
